ARMED response police raced to Viewpark Post Office on Friday morning after a security van was held up by an armed robber.
Officers sealed off a Loomis security van which was parked outside the Scotmid shop and Post Office on Old Edinburgh Road.
Mechanic Michael Geoghegan, who works at nearby garage Park Autos, said: "It seems like the van was held up just before 9am. There was lots of police response and a helicopter was in the air.
"At around 9:40, three armed response cars headed off towards Bellshill at speed."
The Loomis security van is taped off by police.
Just five minutes drive from the scene, a burnt out car, believed to be an Astra, rolled into the side of a house on Rosebank Drive, near to Market Place.
A resident who did not want to be named, added: "There is a burnt out car over at Market Place, baginc, we don't know if it is connected to the robbery but there are police everywhere".
Detective Inspector John Lamb, of Lanarkshire Division, said: ??At around 8.50am a masked man in possession of what appeared to be a firearm threatened a security officer during his cash transit duties outside Scotmid in Old Edinburgh Road, Uddingston.
??The suspect then made off with a cassette containing a five-figure sum of cash. He then made off in a black Vauxhall Astra towards Laburnum Road.
??No firearm was discharged and no one was injured, however the security officer is badly shaken as a result of the incident.
A burnt out car which has rolled into a side of a house was found near to Market Place in Viewpark.
??We are carrying out extensive enquiries in the local area to establish more details on this crime.?
??Officers have been checking CCTV and carrying out door to door enquiries and I would appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious around the times of both of these incidents this morning to come forward as their information may be vital to this inquiry."
The man is described as white, heavy build and wearing a black ski mask with black trousers and a black anorak.
A black Vauxhall Astra found on fire shortly after the incident at Market Place in Uddingston and is now being given a full forensic examination.
